About Turkish Towels
What is a Turkish towel?
Also known as a peshtemal, hammam, or fouta towel, a Turkish towel is a traditional Turkish bath towel woven from cotton on old-style looms. The fine, flat weave makes it thin and lightweight compared to a regular terry towel, but still highly absorbent, wicking water away from the body and drying much faster as a result.
Why buy a Turkish towel instead of a regular one?
They're lighter, more compact, and dry far quicker than a standard towel, so you're not lugging around a damp, musty roll after a swim. That makes them a favourite for the beach, travel, and the gym bag, on top of being genuinely soft and absorbent for everyday home use too.
Are Turkish towels worth the price?
For most people, yes. They cost more than a basic towel because of the premium cotton, specialised weaving process, and the durability that comes with it, a well-made Turkish towel holds up to years of regular use without losing its softness or absorbency.
Quality & Materials
What are Turkish towels made of?
Genuine Turkish towels are made from 100% Turkish cotton, sometimes blended with bamboo. Cotton grown in Turkey's Aegean region is known for its long fibres, which give the finished fabric a soft handle, strong absorbency, and durability that improves rather than wears out over repeated washes.
Are Turkish towels absorbent?
Very. The combination of high-quality cotton and a tight, traditional weave means they soak up moisture quickly, whether that's drying off after a shower or getting sandy after a beach day, and then dry out fast themselves so you're never left with a damp towel.
What does OEKO-TEX certification mean?
OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 is an independent testing system that checks every part of a finished textile, not just the raw cotton, for harmful substances. It confirms the product has been tested and cleared against strict international safety limits before it ever reaches you.
OEKO-TEX® Certified For Peace Of Mind
Our towels carry OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certification, an independent testing system that checks every part of a textile, not just the cotton, for harmful substances. It means what touches your skin at the beach, in the bathroom, or wrapped around your kids has been tested and cleared against strict international safety limits, not just labelled "natural" and left at that.
Care & Longevity
How do I care for my Turkish towel?
Wash with detergent on a low spin cycle, and add a splash of vinegar to the wash for extra softness if you like. Try not to over-wash it, since frequent washing can loosen the tassels into loose threads. If that happens, just twist and re-knot them, it's an easy fix and won't affect how the towel performs.
Can I tumble dry my Turkish towel?
Yes, but keep the heat low. High heat can affect the cotton fibres over time and leave the towel feeling less soft and less absorbent. Give the tassels a quick tighten before or after drying to keep them looking neat.
Will the colour run or fade?
The colour won't run in the wash on a new towel. Extended sun exposure over a long period can cause gradual fading, but that's a slow process, more a sign of a well-loved beach companion than a quality issue.
Will my Turkish towel shrink?
No. Our towels are pre-washed before they ever reach you, specifically to prevent shrinkage in the wash. You won't need to size up or worry about it coming out smaller after a few launders.
How long will a Turkish towel last?
With reasonable care, years. Look after the tassels, keep the heat low when drying, and don't over-wash it, and a good Turkish towel will easily outlast a standard terry towel. We've had ours independently tested too, you can see the results on our product testing page.
Using Your Towel
What can I use a Turkish towel for?
More than you'd think. Beach towel, gym towel, travel towel, picnic rug, sarong, scarf on a cool Aussie evening, even a throw over the couch, the thin, compact weave means it packs down small and pulls double duty well outside the bathroom.
